Oil painting on panel depicting an allegory of Death with an hourglass, an iconography belonging to the memento mori tradition that spread across Europe between the 17th and 19th centuries.

The scene shows a veiled skeletal figure observing an hourglass as sand slowly flows into it. The composition is built around this simple and symbolic gesture: the passing of time. In many similar representations, death appears as an active or threatening force; in this case, however, the figure remains immobile, almost absorbed, contemplating the slow consumption of the grains of sand.

The hourglass thus becomes the fulcrum of the image, an emblem of the transience of life and the temporal dimension of human existence, a central theme in European figurative culture between the Baroque and early Romantic periods.

The painting is executed in oil on wooden panel and features a simple composition based on a few symbolic elements: the veiled skeletal figure, the hourglass, and the red cloth accompanied by flowers, elements that recall the fragility and transience of life.

An interesting example of symbolic painting linked to the tradition of macabre allegories and memento mori, a subject today particularly sought after in collections dedicated to the iconography of death, cabinets of curiosities, and collections of curiosities.
