Three antique carved wood and wrought iron figural supports, Central Europe/Alpine area, circa 17th–18th century.


The figures, carved as highly expressive grotesque masks, belong to a figurative tradition in which the monstrous face not simply represents the demonic, but takes on its language to transform itself into a threshold presence: guardian, protector, intermediary.


The upper elements in wrought iron, hand-forged and structured to accommodate elongated objects, suggest a use linked to the support of tools, blades, rods, or symbols employed in ceremonial, confraternal, or popular ritual contexts.


Objects in which function and symbol coexist: the iron supports, the face watches.
Their strength lies precisely in this fascinating ambiguity—halfway between the grotesque and the ritual, between the visible and the invisible world.


Highly evocative examples, ideal for Wunderkammer collections, symbolic art, or evocative interiors.
