A fascinating and unusual wrought-iron key, of Italian origin and dating back to the 17th century.

The object features a particularly interesting characteristic: an ingenious internal mechanical system, operated via a small plunger built into the bow (handle). This mechanism is connected to a movable tab that extends near the bit of the key, suggesting it was designed for a secret opening function.

This specific configuration may have been intended to trigger a concealed device, such as a hidden compartment or a security hatch; however, its exact original purpose remains unconfirmed.

The key retains a surface rich in patina, bearing the marks of time. There are visible signs of brazing and repairs, likely carried out over the course of its long history. The head of the key shows a slight deformation.

Condition: An antique object with clear signs of age and past repairs. The internal mechanism has deteriorated, making its operation highly delicate and unreliable. Full functionality is not guaranteed.

A particularly intriguing piece for collectors of antique keys, locks, secret mechanisms, and historical curiosities.
