A striking depiction of the severed head of Saint John the Baptist, crafted in polychrome stucco and distinguished by remarkable expressive power.

The face, modeled with meticulous attention to detail, features glass eyes, a semi-open mouth revealing the teeth, deeply sculpted hair and beard, and polychromy that remains partially intact—though now marked by the natural passage of time.
The surface shows abrasions, areas of paint loss, and alterations to the polychromy, all of which contribute to the work's visual authenticity and intense character.

The sculpture is displayed on an elegant, gilded, turned-wood stand in the 18th-century style, featuring a circular top and a molded profile.

A piece of powerful impact—bridging the realms of devotional art, Baroque theatricality, and *Vanitas* culture—it is perfectly suited for a *Wunderkammer* or a collection dedicated to sacred art and the macabre.

Italy, late 18th century.

Polychrome stucco, glass eyes, gilded wooden stand.
