Solid wood Alpine headboard, hand-painted, from the Austro-Bavarian Tyrol region and dated 1870.


The center depicts a penitent Mary Magdalene with her traditional iconographic attributes: the skull, cross, and book, symbols of meditation on the transience of life and the path to spiritual redemption.


In the 19th century, it was customary to decorate the headboards of peasant beds (Bauernbett) with sacred images intended to symbolically protect sleep and the domestic sphere.


The mixtilinear shape with scrolls and the polychrome floral decorations on a blue background are typical features of 19th-century Alpine folk art.
Condition consistent with its age, with authentic patina and signs of use along the edges.
