Vanitas Bishop – memento mori sculpture from an ecclesiastical bust, late 19th century with 20th century reinterpretation

Striking vanitas sculpture created through the reinterpretation of a late 19th century ecclesiastical bust.

The bust, executed in embossed metal with applied decorative elements over a wooden core, represents a bishop according to traditional European sacred art iconography. At a later stage, probably during the mid-20th century, the work was transformed into a compelling memento mori image through the creation of a skull cast in bronze, subsequently patinated in visual continuity with the original surface.

The result is a powerful Christian vanitas image, in which ecclesiastical authority symbolically confronts the universal theme of mortality, echoing the European tradition of danse macabre and symbolic representations of death.

Inside the mitre, fragments of Italian period paper and newspaper are present, suggesting a historical transformation likely dating to the first half of the 20th century. The intervention appears coherent in both execution and patina, contributing to the overall unity and historical character of the piece.

An object of strong visual presence, suspended between sacred art, Wunderkammer culture and early 20th century symbolic sensibility.

A highly unusual and probably unique example, difficult to associate with known typologies.

Ideal for cabinets of curiosities, theatrical interiors, creative studios or collections focused on vanitas and memento mori imagery.
