This impressive and dramatic 19th-century circular convex mirror features an elaborate ornamental frame made of embossed, perforated, and gilded sheet metal.

The frame features a complex decorative repertoire in neo-Baroque and neo-Rococo styles, consisting of volutes, racemes, plant motifs, and anthropomorphic figures.

Particularly noteworthy is the presence of four grotesque anthropomorphic masks, distributed symmetrically around the circumference of the frame. The highly stylized faces are integrated into the decoration and alternate with the volutes and plant motifs, creating a refined ornamental rhythm.

The use of masks and fantastical figures within ornamental repertoires of volutes and racemes is characteristic of the Baroque decorative tradition and its subsequent 19th-century reinterpretations. In this example, the four faces are some of the frame's most distinctive elements, lending it a particularly expressive force.

Completing the decoration are four oval stone inserts, arranged symmetrically along the frame. According to information provided by the previous owner, the inserts are identifiable as:
lapis lazuli, with its characteristic intense blue color;jasper, polychrome and veined;light agate, with evident natural stratifications;dark agate, characterized by pronounced black and white bands.The stones appear to have been applied to the frame from the back.

At the center of the frame is the large original convex mirror, inserted within a turned wooden frame. The reflective surface displays natural alterations, glazes, and irregularities that have developed over time, contributing to the object's unique charm.

THE WITCHES' MIRROR
Convex mirrors of this type are also known as "Witches' Mirrors," a term derived from the French word Œil de Sorcière.
The unique curvature of the glass allows it to reflect a much larger portion of the room than a flat mirror. The image consequently appears rounded and distorted, creating an almost surreal effect that makes this type of mirror instantly recognizable.
The name "Witches' Mirror" stems from the tradition and antiquarian language that developed around this particular type and contributes to the mysterious imagery that still surrounds these objects today.
