An exceptional object to say the least.

An alms shrine dedicated to the souls of the Capuchin friars of the Sicilian catacombs.The catacombs of Sicily are famous throughout the world for the presence of hundreds of mummified bodies, including the section of the friars.

This alms box made of wood (without glass) features inside two bodies of friars made of wax with truly unique and impressive details all handcrafted such as insects, bone remains, candles and a mouse.

The shrine was originally built into a wall, probably of a shrine, it served as an almoner.

The offered coins were then collected in a container that was attached or sometimes also collected on the ground, on the opposite side of the wall.A unique collector's item that can easily be hung on a wall like a painting.

Italy, Sicily, late 18th century, dimensions 81 x 59 x 12 cm, (31,9" x 23,2" x 4,7").
