The subject of the painting is taken from the Holy Scriptures and corresponds to the episode in which King Solomon is called to establish justice between two women who both claim the motherhood of a newborn baby.

The painting represents a well-known episode from the Bible featuring Solomon, the third king of Israel, to whom extraordinary wisdom was attributed. According to the sacred tale, two women appeared before the king with a newborn baby, both claiming to be its mother. To understand which of the two was lying, Solomon proposed cutting the child in half and giving a portion to each of them. One woman accepted, while the other, desperate at the idea of the newborn being killed, begged the king to hand him over to her rival; the king understood that she was the real mother, and returned her son to her.
